Stand Tall for Peace
The Holosy Choir recently joined forces with Grade 5 students at Holliston School and the congregation at Calvin Goforth Presbyterian Church to show support for the people of Ukraine in the current conflict with Russia. The project began when students from Holliston School distributed packages of sunflower seeds in the neighbourhood, asking residents to plant them in a show of support for Ukraine and its people. The congregation at Calvin Goforth church, located just down the street from the school, then offered to provide planting boxes in their parking lot for the students to plant sunflowers that would grow over the summer. The Holosy Choir, which has recently been rehearsing at Calvin Goforth, was invited along to participate in the planting ceremony last Tuesday. The event opened with the choir and students singing “O Canada” The choir sang in French, English and Ukrainian, and the students added a fourth language – sign language. Official greetings from the City of Saskatoon were brought by councillor Cynthia Block, filling in for Mayor Clark who was unable to be there. Music was shared, with the students singing and signing “Make a Better World,”and the choir responding with its own theme song “Голоси” and a humourous piece about a cat and a baba. The sunflower boxes, one painted blue and one yellow, will remain in the church lot all summer reminding everyone who drives by of the war in Ukraine, the terrible toll it has taken in lives, and the continued need for support for Ukraine and its people.
